Engineering software for designing, modelling and analysing passive WDM optical networks.
WDM Network Link-Loss Calculator is an engineering tool for designing and analysing optical networks based on passive WDM components.
The application allows users to build daisy-chain and branched network topologies, configure the optical characteristics of the network and calculate the accumulated link budget at every node.
Receiver power can be evaluated throughout the network and, where required, active elements such as optical repeaters and EDFAs can be introduced to study their effect on network performance.
🌳 Network topology
Build daisy-chain and branched WDM networks.
🔀 Optical link budget
Calculate DROP and BYPASS losses at every node.
🔦 Receiver power
Calculate optical power reaching each receiver and
compare it with receiver sensitivity.
🔁 Optical repeaters
Evaluate signal regeneration before long or
high-loss network sections.
⚡ EDFA amplification
Analyse the effect of optical amplification on the
BYPASS signal.
1 Configure the network parameters
2 Build the network topology
3 Assign equipment to each node
4 Calculate DROP and BYPASS link budgets
5 Check receiver power and status
6 Introduce REPEATER or EDFA amplification where required
The optical model can be adapted to the characteristics of the equipment and fibre used in each project. The main configurable parameters include:
Default values are provided as a starting point, but users should enter the values corresponding to the actual equipment and fibre infrastructure being analysed.
At each WDM node the optical signal can follow two different paths:
DROP
Represents the optical path towards the local
transceiver or receiver.
BYPASS / UG
Represents the optical path that continues through
the upgrade port towards the following network node.
Previous node
↓
WDM MUX
↙ ↘
DROP BYPASS / UG
DROP
Accumulated optical budget towards the local receiver.
BYPASS
Accumulated optical budget towards the next network
section.
Rx Power
Estimated optical power reaching the receiver,
expressed in dBm.
Status
Indicates whether the calculated receiver power is
above the configured receiver sensitivity.
Active elements can be introduced when the accumulated optical losses make it necessary to extend the network reach. REPEATERS and EDFAs perform different functions and should not be considered equivalent.
A repeater regenerates the optical signal before it enters the following network span.
It can be used when the following fibre section would otherwise result in insufficient optical power at a downstream receiver.
An Erbium-Doped Fibre Amplifier amplifies the optical BYPASS signal without regenerating it.
The calculator considers EDFA gain together with its minimum input power and maximum output power when calculating the signal delivered to the following network section.
Each node can be configured with its distance from the previous node and the optical equipment installed at that location.
Nodes can form a simple daisy-chain or create branches, allowing more complex WDM network architectures to be modelled.
The graphical tree provides a visual representation of the resulting network topology and can be shown or hidden while editing the network.
